Joan's introduction to folk art began when she took lessons as a young woman from her mother who was an artist and member of the Historical Society of Early American Decoration. After a 40+ year career as an architectural historian, Joan returned to her vocation as a folk artist, painting not only scenes featuring historic buildings, but also theorem paintings, reverse painting on glass, and decorated pantry boxes. She has been listed in Early American Life Magazine's Directory of Traditional American Crafts since 2017.
